What are veneers?

Veneers are wafer-thin facets made of high-quality ceramics, which improve the shape, position and size of teeth in an aesthetically unobtrusive way. Veneers are permanently attached to the front surface of the tooth by minimally invasive grinding of the tooth substance using a special glue.

Veneers: Types

Ceramic veneers

Veneers made of feldspar ceramics give your tooth a natural lively appearance by their good light feature and natural transparency of your teeth and are biologically well tolerated. The aesthetic result is indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Lumineers

Lumineers (also called non-prep veneers) do not require any grinding of the tooth substance. This makes them suitable exclusively for closing tooth gaps in an otherwise straight dental arch with straight teeth.

Venners-to-Go

Veneers-to-Go (also called Immediate Veneers) are not custom-made. They do not fit accurately and are therefore more likely to damage your teeth in the long run. The Dental Clinic Lucerne does not recommend the treatment with Veneers-to-Go.

What is the process of getting veneers?

When a patient who is unhappy with the appearance of his teeth comes in, we first listen to his ideas. We conduct a dental examination, take impressions, determine the color, take photos and visualize the result directly in the mouth, of how we can fix his tooth marks using veneers. After a minimally invasive grinding of the tooth surfaces, the patient receives a temporary restoration with the new tooth position, shape and size. After the try-in, if necessary, the desired changes are made until the veneers are adhesively fixed permanently. The duration of the treatment is 14 days.

The overall feeling with us from the initial consultation to the completion of beautiful teeth with veneers is a different kind of dental experience. The patient feels that there is a lot of heart and soul, attention to detail coupled with a lot of professionalism and experience behind our entire process of creating veneers. We create veneers individually to fit the shape of each face and smile. They perfectly blend in with the surrounding teeth, look beautifully natural and fix the previous tooth mark.

When are veneers suitable?

Veneers are particularly suitable for the treatment of anterior and posterior teeth in cases of:

  • tooth discoloration
  • tooth damage due to caries
  • tooth fractures
  • enamel defects
  • tooth gaps, tooth misalignments
  • differences in tooth size
  • aged and worn teeth

Disadvantages of veneers

Depending on the tooth malposition different amounts of tooth substance must be removed. If one is unhappy with the veneers that have been made, they can only be replaced with new veneers. With accurate planning and good pre-treatment, the preparation for ceramic veneers is very predictable. We aim for minimally invasive removal of tooth structure to preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible. A ceramic veneer requires a layer thickness of 0.3 to 1.0 millimeter. A non-prep veneer requires no tooth preparation and is 0.3 millimeters thin.

Cost of veneers

Each design of a smile is individually tailored according to the individual needs and patient's wishes. The personal initial consultation is the best way to determine what exactly the patient needs to get their desired teeth. We listen carefully to the patient and show them directly in their mouth how we can optimize their teeth. Our veneers are handmade from feldspar ceramics. We work with the highest perfection in imitation of nature with translucent cutting edges, which naturally fit your face. The price also reflects the quality of each veneer.

Handmade vs. machine-made veneers

There are basically two approaches for creating veneers: Hand-crafted individualized plates and a machine-made method, but usually less accurate and less aesthetic. Machine-made veneers do not reproduce the naturalness of a tooth. They look unnatural and mono-colored, but they are cheap because there is no or very little time involved in their production. With us, on the other hand, the entire process of creating veneers is very artistic and there is a lot of passionate, handmade professional and personal work of a dental technician behind it. This is how we achieve the highest level of aesthetics, which faithfully imitates the natural translucency of the various shades of a tooth as well as their surface texture.

Frequently asked questions

How many veneers do you usually get?

Whether 2, 4, 6 or more veneers are needed to achieve the perfect smile varies from patient to patient. The number of veneers recommended depends on the individual tooth position, tooth shape, tooth size, dental arch level and tooth surface. The shape of the face, the proportions of the face, the individual smile and the patient's wishes also play a role.

How long do veneers last?

Thanks to state-of-the-art materials and precision work by an experienced dentist, high-quality, handmade ceramic veneers can last anywhere from 20-30 years to a lifetime.

How do veneers feel?

Ceramic veneers feel completely natural, just as or even smoother and finer than teeth without veneers. Semi-annual professional dental cleanings and annual dental check-ups maintain the beautiful, natural feel of ceramic veneers. You can eat everything immediately with ceramic veneers and you don't have to pay attention to anything. Everything that can be done with natural teeth can be done with ceramic veneers without any restrictions.

Can a veneer become discolored?

The material ceramic is insensitive to discoloration, which is why veneers cannot discolor. This makes it even more important to seek professional advice when selecting the tooth shade for ceramic veneers. It is important to ensure that the selected tooth color matches the color of the remaining teeth for a lifetime. Discoloration of the own teeth should be prevented by semi-annual professional dental cleanings and, if necessary, in-office bleaching to maintain the aesthetic result in the long term.

What do you do after veneers?

Patients who grind or press their teeth are given a special, customized crunching splint to protect the veneers from damage while they sleep. Otherwise, the ceramic veneers should be cared for in the same way as the rest of the teeth. Flossing is also important for veneers.
